The Spirit of the Baobab Tree

As a foster child, nine-year-old Jelani turns to drawing as a means to cope with loneliness and the mean children in his class. One day a magical storyteller appears from the pages of Jelani’s sketchbook and leads them on a historical journey through time. Uncovering the truth behind his drawings, Jelani and his classmates experience first-hand how their ancestors lived and what their social, economic, political, and cultural life was like. Drawing on the past experiences of his ancestors, Jelani finds the strength he needs to overcome his own obstacles, and he and his classmates develop a new sense of pride about their past, present and future.
